Sale of by-products
Coke, iron and steel are the most familiar goods produced by an integrated iron and steel works, but products such as ferrous metallurgical slag (blast furnace/steel plant) and coal derivatives (coking plant) are manufactured here as well.
Crude benzene, which is separated from coke oven gas with a washing process, is primarily used in the manufacture of plastics. In the pharmaceutical industry, however, crude benzene is also used to manufacture medicines.
Electrode binder, which is required for the manufacture of aluminum, is produced from a coal-tar base. Coal tar is also a primary product in the manufacture of paints and varnishes.
Because the petroleum-based products can be partially replaced with coal by-products, their use also serves to preserve natural resources.
